Authorities of Transdniestria (autonomous region in Moldova) denied
entry to US Ambassador to Moldova, Asif Chaudhry. The American
diplomat was expected to participate in a working group meeting aimed
at strengthening mutual trust between the two banks of Dniester,
Russian news agency Itar-Tass reports.
The ban against diplomats from the US and the EU countries came into
effect in March 2009 in Transdniestria in response to a decision
by the US and the European Union to prolong a similar ban against
Transdniestria’s diplomats.
The US and the EU introduced the first ban against Transdniestrian
authorities in 2003, citing the reason as being that its leaders
are unwilling to support international efforts aimed at a peaceful
settlement of the conflict.
Transdniestria is located de jure in Eastern Moldova as the autonomous
region Stînga Nistrului ("Left Dnestr bank"), mostly in a strip
between the Dniester River and the eastern Moldovan border to Ukraine.
Since its declaration of independence in 1990, it is governed de
facto by the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR),
which claims the east bank of the river Dniester and a small land
located on the right bank of the Dniester river.
