OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Kazakh Secretary of State and Foreign Minister
Kanat Saudabayev is cautiously optimistic about the settlement of the
Karabakh issue. "We intend to give new impetus to the settlement of
the Karabakh issue, but we know that it’s up to the two countries to
resolve the conflict," Saudabayev said during a joint press conference
with Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.
"We must support and realize any initiative targeted at defusing the
tension, including the withdrawal of the snipers from the contact
line," the OSCE Chairperson said.
The Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mmmadyarov, declared
yesterday that the updated Madrid Principles are acceptable to
Azerbaijan.
"The Madrid proposals submitted to the parties in November 2007 are
one the table today. I’d like to remind that throughout the year
Azerbaijan was refusing to accept the proposals. They were denying
the existence of such a document," Nalbandian said.
According to the Armenian Foreign Minister, the parties are now working
on the proposals regarding the working document to be submitted to
the mediators. "I think the Azerbaijani side will present proposals
and we’ll continue the discussions," Edward Nalbandian said.
