BAKU, February 18 (Itar-Tass) – Exchanges of fire that broke out on
the line of contact between the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces in
the zone of conflict in the much-troubled enclave of Nagorny Karabakh
have claimed the lives of three Azerbaijani soldiers, Eldar Sabiroglu,
the chief press officer at Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Thursday.
He indicated that Armenian armed units violated the ceasefire agreement
on various sections of the frontline Thursday and exchanges of fire
occurred as a result.
"Upon meeting with a resounding rebuff, the enemy retreated and their
losses were no smaller than ours," Sabiroglu said.
The Chief of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces General Staff, Najmaddin
Sadykhov, confirmed the information on exchanges of fire in Karabakh
to the ANS TV channel.
He believes the Armenian side has stepped up its activity in the
light of a military exercise held by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
"Appropriate measures have been taken on the Azerbaijani side,"
Sadykhov said.
