GENOCIDE DISCUSSION IN U.S. CONCERNS WASHINGTON-ANKARA RELATIONS: EXPERT

"Genocide issue is as strong as it was, and the reason it is more
urgent today is connected with Turkey. Having the possibility of
Genocide resolution adopted is also connected with that country,"
Director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies
Richard Giragosian told journalists on Feb. 24.
The expert commented on discussions on motion for Genocide resolution
vote scheduled for March 4, 2010 in the U.S. Congress.
"I do not expect Congress to recognize the fact of Genocide. Turkey
has to admit there was Genocide, but it hesitates to change. In
many regards, Turkey’s policy on Protocols strengthens the Genocide
recognition issue even more," Giragosian said. The expert also added
that Genocide discussion in Washington refers to U.S.-Turkey relations.
"After Protocols’ signing Turkey plays games, testing both Armenia
and international community. This is the only issue that Russians,
Americans and Europeans agree on, everyone is in accord holding
expectations from Turkey. Armenia is unable to do anything and should
not do so. If Turkey misses the chance, it will have to pay for it,"
Giragosian stated.
"If Armenian leadership makes the Protocols out, it will mean nothing
from domestic problems’ solution viewpoint. If Turkey opens the
border and sends one diplomat to Armenia, it is the least a normal
country should do. Thus, Turkey should not get award for that,"
the expert concluded.
