What means the activation of the talks over the discussion of the
genocide resolution at the U.S. Congress and how it fits into the
Armenian and Turkish process? The ACNIS expert Manvel Sargsyan dwelt
on this topic on February 24.
He said that many times the Turkish leaders say that by starting the
Armenian and Turkish normalization process they pursued one goal:
to make the international society to deal with the Karabakh issue and
to solve it in favor of Azerbaijan. The international society seems
to have done the same, making the genocide issue a problem for Turkey.
According to Manvel Sargsyan, the Armenian society had better be
deprived of expectations whether Obama will pronounce or not the
word genocide. Both Armenia and Turkey had better have direct aims
to normalize their relations. Manvel Sargsyan says that all this is
very dangerous. It is very dangerous to make the genocide issue a
political one. And it is more dangerous to use the Karabakh issue to
reach some objectives both for Armenia and Turkey. He says that now
there is no way of influence, all the levers have the superpowers.
He notes that initiating the process with Armenia, Turkey set forward
all the demands it has been claiming for many years, including those
connected with the genocide recognition. According to Manvel Sargsyan,
Turkey proposed to Armenia useless protocols. Armenia accepted many
things and only after it understood that it did not have to. Turkey
too understands now that its demands had better to be different,
says Manvel Sargsyan.
"I do not know the reason why the U.S. circulates this issue. There is
the impression as if it is some kind of repression on Turkey to ratify
the protocols. But I have the opposite feeling: they do everything
for Turkey not to ratify the protocols. They try to break Turkey’s
initiatives, its ambitions. They propose to Turkey some other way for
the normalization which Turkey does not accept. Serious developments
are taking place in Turkey, I will not be surprised if a crisis starts
there soon", says Manvel Sargsyan.
