At the meeting with students of the International Relations Department,
University of Vilnius, Lithuania, Turkish Minister for EU Affairs
and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis told about the Turkey-EU relations.
Bagis pointed out that Turkey’s way to the EU is not easy, but it is
not only the country’s wish, but also "a foreign strategy aim."
According to him, the Europeans’ fears that 70-milling-strong Turkey
can Islamize 500-million-strong EU are ungrounded.
The Minister also informed students that Turkey is acting as mediator
in the Syrian-Israeli, Syrian-Iraqi, Israeli-Lebanese, Russian-Georgian
and Armenian-Azerbaijani conflicts.
Mr. Bagis seems to believe that Lithuanian students are unaware of the
fact that Turkey, which is posing as a "dove of peace" in the region,
is far from being a mediator. Rather it is actually a party to the
conflict due to its biased policy and 15-year-long blockade of Armenia.
