/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Rosbalt Moscow-based information agency hosted a
discussion titled `Nagorno Karabakh: problem without a solution’.
Discussion participants assessed the risk of a new war in the region,
attempting to work out a reasonable compromise; NKR’s offer to move
Karabakh conflict from interethnic level to the sphere of
international legislation, as well as the influence of Armenia-Turkey
rapprochement on Karabakh conflict settlement were discussed.
Politologist, candidate of Historic Sciences, Caucasus expert Sergey
Makedonov; historian and politologist Darya Mitina; advisor to NKR
Foreign Minister Ruben Zargaryan, first vice president of Strategic
Development Modelling Centre Grigori Trofimchuk participated in the
discussion, Rosbalt reported.
The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out in
1988, as result of the ethnic cleansing the latter launched in the
final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991
(when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a
ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno
Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions is now under
control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace
talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
