The Armenakan-Ramkavar Liberal Party has issued the following statement
on the 2nd anniversary of the events of March 1-2, 2008.
On March 1, we will mark on of the most tragic pages of independent
Armenia’s history – the second anniversary of calamitous events
of 2008.
The tragedy revealed that the culture of political struggle in the
RoA has yet to be crafted. During those dreadful days, the sides
engaged in a struggle for power took illegal steps that lead to an
unavoidable confrontation and the deaths of innocent people.
And even though two years have passed, an appropriate evaluation of
the March 1st events has yet to be made. The parties involved still
seek to exploit what happened, hurling a variety of charges against
one another.
The judicial processes and different review bodies that were created
have sadly not been able to fully depict what actually transpired.
Also, those truly guilty have never been identified not brought on
held accountable for their actions in the courts. This resulted in
the fact that many wound up indicted by the judicial system and behind
bars based on purely political considerations.
The Armenakan-Ramkavar Liberal Party hereby declares that the
truly guilty party for the tragic events of March 1, 2008, was the
irresponsible and short-sighted leadership of the opposition, and that
that those responsible was the top echelon of the ruling regime that
neglected the people’s protest and relied on crude force in response.
Given that those truly responsible have never been called to account
the Party demands the immediate release of all those still being
detained on charges related to those events, to respect the memory of
the innocent victims and to halt all manipulations surrounding March
1. At the same time, we demand that convincing guarantees be made
that such violent confrontations never be repeated in our country
that has accepted democracy as its guiding tenet.
