WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is urging Congress to hold
off on a resolution that could anger Turkey — an important NATO ally.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee has scheduled a vote today on a
resolution declaring that the killing of Armenians during the Ottoman
era was genocide. And the panel seems likely to endorse it.

But the White House says Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has
spoken with the chairman of the House panel, and indicated that the
vote would threaten reconciliation talks between Turkey and Armenia.

During his campaign, President Barack Obama had said he would label
the killings as genocide. But Turkish officials have warned that the
resolution could jeopardize U.S-Turkish cooperation.

Historians estimate that up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by
Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I. Turkey says the number
is inflated, and that the people who died were victims of civil war
and unrest.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
