Azeri parliament, government condemn US vote on Armenian resolution

[Presenter] Azerbaijani parliament has strongly reacted to yesterday’s
decision of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate to
approve the bill on the so-called Armenian genocide. Even suggestions
were voiced at the Milli Maclis [parliament] to recall our ambassador
to the United States. MPs clearly say that no matter what steps Ankara
takes, Azerbaijan will be by Turkey’s side.

[Correspondent over video of parliament session] MPs started the
discussion of issues on the agenda of today’s plenary session of the
Milli Maclis with protesting at the decision of the Foreign Relations
Committee of the US House of Representatives to approve the bill on
the so-called Armenian genocide.

MP Iqbal Agazada said he regretted the Congress decision and that this
step would have a negative effect on regional developments. His
colleague Yaqub Mahmudov suggested that the Milli Maclis adopt a
statement condemning the decision.

[Passage omitted: Mahmudov says native Americans were also subjected
to genocide]

A harsher suggestion came from Qudrat Hasanquliyev. He suggested that
Azerbaijan should recall its ambassador to the USA to show support for
Turkey.

[Qudrat Hasanquliyev] I suggest that Azerbaijani parliament raise
before the Foreign Ministry and government the issue of recalling our
ambassador to the USA. There are grounds for this because the United
States has failed for a long time to appoint an ambassador to
Azerbaijan. [Editorial cut] I believe that this is the expression of
an unfriendly approach to Azerbaijan and that the ambassador is not
being appointed in a purposeful manner. Our parliament should express
its strongest protest against this. We should also state that it is
under the rule of [Barack] Obama, the son of Hussein, that tensions
have been growing in relations with the Islamic world.

[Correspondent] Qanira Pasayeva said the decision was an insult to all
Turks. While the draft resolution on the Xocali tragedy, which is
backed by evidence, is yet to be approved, all Turkic states should
protest against this.

MP Elman Mammadov described the United States as an occupier and
described it [the decision] as well-thought-out pressure on Turkey.

Vice-speaker Ziyafat Asgarov reminded the congressmen who took the
unfair decision of the killings in Iraq and Afghanistan committed by
their country.

Vahid Ahmadov said that a political game was under way and that
Azerbaijan was experiencing serious problems in the settlement of the
Nagornyy Karabakh problem. Azerbaijan should make a serious correction
to its foreign policy. Even Georgia, which we have declared our
strategic partner and which we render assistance, is building
relations with Armenia. A world policy is being pursued which does not
suit us, whereas pressure is being exerted on Turkey to open borders
with Armenia, he said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
