ArmInfo. Armenia has to a certain extent acquired a new political
status in the region by trying to mediate in the talks between Tbilisi
and Moscow on opening of the Upper Lars check-point, said Alexander
Markarov, Armenian political expert, Director of the Armenian branch of
the CIS Institute, at today’s television bridge Yerevan-Tbilisi-Moscow.
Armenia is not the only beneficiary in this case. Both Russia and
Georgia have their own hopes to pin on the opening of Upper Lars. For
Moscow this may be a signal for restarting regular flights, while for
the Georgians living in the nearby areas this may become a solution
to their social-economic problems.
To remind, the Kazbegi-Upper Lars check point on the Russian-Georgian
border has been kept closed for three years. It was closed by Russia.
for repair and re-equipment. The check point was reopened Mar 1 2010.
The relevant talks were mediated by Armenia.
