Interview with Azerbaijani political expert Arif Yunusov.

In your opinion, what will be the fate of the "Armenian genocide"
resolution in the U.S. Congress?

First of all, Western countries have raised "Armenian question"
since the late 19th century to put pressure on Turkey. The point
here is not the Armenians. The West just wants to keep Turkey under
control and for them it does not matter through what means they will
do it. If the "Armenian genocide" is recognized, new claims related
to the Kurdish and Cyprus issues will be put forward.

What do you think U.S. wants from Turkey? What is the reason for
such pressure?

Iranian issue is most important for Washington in this regard. The
U.S. wants Ankara to change its attitude towards Tehran. Currently,
Washington builds its policy in the region around Iran.

In addition, the United States want Ankara to make changes to its
relations with Moscow and Israel, which have seen some cooling in
recent times And, of course, Washington wants Ankara to have more
loyal attitude towards Armenia.

In general, I don’t really believe that the "Armenian genocide"
will be adopted at the legislative level in the U.S. Situation such
as this has already occurred in 2007. But, as we see, the issue has
not received legislative approval yet.

The United States sent its mission to Anatolia about 90 years ago
to verify the "Armenian genocide" in the Ottoman Empire. Why, in
your opinion, Congress didn’t adopt it back then and raised it once
again now?

Not the United States, but the United Kingdom was most active in the
"Armenian question" a few decades ago. It should be noted, that when
the Allied armies occupied the Ottoman Empire, they took most of their
archives from the capital. So, today Ottoman archives are not stored
in Ankara, but in London. Then there was some Antonyan report, based
on data from archives, which is published by Armenia to this day,
and is supposedly one of the main evidence of those events. But,
as verified by the English themselves, the Antonyan documents are
compiled on basis of falsified data.

The United States also sent its representatives to Anatolia and
concluded that there no "Armenian genocide" took place in Turkey. But
at that time Turkey was not a singular force in the region, and
therefore the issue had died down, so that to appear with a renewed
force at a time when Turkey would enjoy much more influence in the
world and the region. If Ankara was not so strong today, no one would
even remember the "Armenian genocide".

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
