Azerbaijan, Baku, March 16 / Trend News V. Zhavoronkova / The United
States intends to continue to work hard to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict.

"The United States will continue to work hard to resolve the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict", the U.S embassy in Azerbaijan public policy
department head Terry Davidson told media today.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s resolutions
on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied
territories.

According to him, the U.S. along with the settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are working with the Azerbaijani government
to improve human rights protection.

"We are constantly discussing the issue of human rights with the
Azerbaijani government. This is an area in which we work together to
develop it," Davidson said.
