On March 16 the Chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Protection
of Human Rights and Public Affairs Aram Safaryan received the Special
Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to
Armenia Mrs. Silvia Zehe.

Welcoming the guests the Committee Chairman Aram Safaryan presented the
functions and further works of the committee at Ms. Zehe’s request,
noting that it is envisaged to organize three parliamentary hearings
concerning the spheres of the committee’s activity. He said that he was
familiar with all PACE resolutions concerning Armenia and permanently
had been for the resolutions and fulfillment of our obligations. In
this context the Chairman of the Committee touched upon the works of
the Ad-hoc Inquiry Committee on March 1-2 Events, noting that he had
actively taken part in the works of the Ad-hoc Committee, and it had
presented a final conclusion created on the basis of consensus, and
the author of the introductory part was himself. In Mr. Safaryan’s
opinion, there is no need of creating a new Ad-hoc Committee as the
further inquiry of the March 1 events was laid down on the NA Standing
Committee on State and Legal Affairs.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of
Europe to Armenia Mrs. Silvia Zehe expressed willingness for jointly
working and noted that the aim of the visit was to support the works
of the committee. She congratulated Aram Safaryan on being elected
Committee Chairman and expressed hope that the cooperation with the
committee would be continuous.

In the course of the meeting the sides touched upon other issues of
bilateral interest.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
