Garegin Njdeh Bridge, located in Yerevan and known also as Vstrech
Bridge ("Meeting Bridge") will be reopened in October this year,
said Director of Program Implementation at Yerevan City Hall Levon
Hakobyan at a press conference today.

Last year, Yerevan City Hall had said the bridge, built in 1965,
would be closed for 8 months for reconstruction. The reconstruction
tender had been won by GRIAR CJSC which, however, did not complete
the reconstruction.

According to Hakobyan, an adjoining premise happened to be under
the bridge, and the elimination of that premise would not help
reconstruct the bridge, explaining that instead of reconstruction,
rebuilding works are necessary. Hakobyan mentioned that the contract
with GRIAR was annulled. Instead, a new tender was announced which
was won by Kamurj Shin company.

In his words, currently Kamurj Shin is rebuilding the bridge, including
fastening the columns so that they meet earthquake safety standards.

The rebuilding project, which will cost 1.8 billion AMD, began on
March 1, 2010, and is expected to be completed in October. Trucks
will also be allowed to use this bridge as before when the bridge
has been rebuilt.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
