IT’S BEEN PROVEN: ARMENIA HAS POOREST INTERNET ACCESSIBILITY IN REGION

A BBC study on internet accessibility has revealed that Armenia still
remains among the most poorly developed countries in the region.

In 2008, there were 191,000 internet users in Armenia, while in 2009,
that number has increased only by 3.2%.

With this data Armenia, is placed among those countries – including
Nigeria, Sudan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan – where there are only 6-10
internet users among 100,000 inhabitants, while Georgia was in the
group of 16-20 internet users among 100,000 inhabitants. The figures
look better for Azerbaijan where, according to the study, there are
26-30 internet users per 100,000 residents, while in Iran and Turkey
that number exceeds to 31.

Interestingly, this year the number of internet users in Georgia has
increased 2.85 times compared with 2009 and exceeded 1 million users.

The number of internet users in Azerbaijan has been increased by
57.3%, comprising about 2.45 million, while in Turkey and Iran that
number has increased by 15.6% and 78% respectively.

The BBC data shows that, during the past 10 years, internet
accessibility has developed rather poorly. In 1998, the difference in
the number of internet users was quite marginal – only 4,000 internet
users in Armenia, and 5,000 and 3,000 in Georgia and Azerbaijan,
respectively.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
