Political scientist has commented on the diplomatic activeness between
Yerevan and Ankara and visit of the deputy Turkish foreign minister
to Yerevan.
‘The process of the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement has really become
a great problem and Ankara cannot find the way out of the established
situation. On the other hand, the United States and EU put pressure
on Turkey for it to open borders with Armenia and on the other hand
Azerbaijan is against this rapprochement without the Karabakh conflict
resolution. Therefore, Turkey is stuck in the labyrinth which it is
unable to overcome’, said Turkish political scientist, professor of
the 21st century university Arif Keskin, commenting on the diplomatic
activity between Yerevan and Ankara.
‘The ruling party would have opened the borders with Armenia long
before, but it cannot risk due to the position of Baku and the Turkish
public. The elections in Turkey will be held in a year and if the
ruling party settles the Armenian issue unilaterally without taking
into account Azerbaijan’s interests, it may lose the elections.
Baykal, Bakhchali and other political powers who support the process
of normalization of relations with Armenia will immediately change
their direction and start to use the Azerbaijani trump card. Thus,
for the ruling party this process is a big risk. After the recent
events the love for Azerbaijan has grown several times in the Turkish
public, which means the Azerbaijani factor has become a serious factor
in Turkey’s internal political life’, he said.
