YEREVAN
The former Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic,
currently the leader of the Christian Democratic faction Pavol
Hrusovsky accompanied by the President of the Forum of Armenian
Associations of Europe (FAAE) and the Chairman of the Armenian
community in the Slovak Republic Ashot Grigorian arrived in Armenia
on April 14. On 30 November 2004 when P. Hrusovsky was the speaker,
the Slovak National Council adopted a resolution recognizing the
Armenian Genocide.
According to the press service of FAAE, during a recent talk with A.
Grigorian, P. Hrusovsky said that members of the parliaments that
have passed resolutions on the Genocide are surprised and enraged
at the statements of Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan. In the words
of P Hrusovsky, Erdogan has no right to hurl accusatory opinions at
the parliaments of independent European countries for their giving
a political assessment of the genocide committed by Turkey. He said
that the National Council of the Slovak Republic had confirmed the
indisputable fact of the Armenian Genocide, discussed the necessity
of giving a political assessment of it and, as a result, passed the
resolution without any vote against.
A. Grigorian also confirmed that at the time the Slovak National
Council had seriously prepared for adoption of the Armenian Genocice
reolution, and after discussing all the aspects, it passed the
resolution without any vote against, which is a vivid fact per se.
Below is the resolution on the Armenian Genocide adopted by the
National Council of the Slovak Republic in 2004:
"The National Council of the Slovak Republic acknowledges the fact of
the genocide committed in the Ottoman Turkey in 1915, during which
hundreds of thousands of Armenian citizens of the Ottoman Empire
were killed, and considers these events a crime against humanity. The
National Council notes that
1. Until now Turkey has not recognized the Armenian Genocide committed
in 1915.
2. Since the independence of the Republic of Armenia up to now,
Turkey has maintained a blockade of the Armenian border. Armenia was
deprived of the shortest route to Europe and has no diplomatic and
economic relations with Turkey.
3. The Turkish parliament passed a law, under which criminal
proceedings are initiated against persons who speak about the Armenian
Genocide.
4. The rights of the Armenian minority living in Turkey are subjected
to systematic pressure".
This resolution was presented for discussion during the vote held
by the Slovak National Council on the issue of Turkey’s becoming a
candidate member of the European Union. The resolution was accepted
as a precondition for EU membership.
