Azerbaijan likely to turn to Moscow: A. Melikyan
14:00 / 04/17/2010 Azerbaijan is likely to turn its foreign policy
course towards Moscow, former NKR Foreign Minister Arman Melikyan told
NEWS.am, commenting on recent statement by top Azerbaijani official
Ali Hasanov.
Melikyan considers that Azerbaijan would get high dividends if turned
to Moscow 3-4 years ago. `Presently, Baku will benefit much less from
it,’ he noted. According to him, Azerbaijan has already undertaken
certain steps in this direction, but found difficulty in replying
whether Baku succeeds in this.
Melikyan underlined that Azerbaijan exaggerates Washington’s support
to Yerevan. `It is hard to say why Baku drew a conclusion that
Washington backs Yerevan more. Possibly, the reason is that unlike his
Armenian counterpart Azerbaijani president was not invited to
Washington nuclear security summit. If so, this is not sufficient for
Baku’s criticism against U.S.,’ Melikyan noted, adding that most
likely Azerbaijan simply seeks formal causes to change its political
course towards Moscow.
`Azerbaijan takes adequate steps to find a viable solution to Karabakh
conflict. Presently, anti-American propaganda directed primarily
against Armenia’s imperialist policy in Congress and the U.S.
authorities. We have repeatedly recalled U.S., that it is one of OSCE
MG Co-chairing states settling Armenia-Azerbaijan issue on Karabakh
conflict. We urged Armenia to mind the issue for breaking through the
tight situation it is trapped. In this regard, recently Azerbaijani
society voices righteous discontent both in media and amid
parliamentarians,’ said Azerbaijani Presidential Administration
Public-Political Department head Ali Hasanov.
