BOSTON — Each year the Massachusetts state Legislature commemorates
the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide by honoring its survivors,
both past and present. This year the commemoration will conducted
Friday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m., at the Massachusetts State House,
House of Representatives Chamber, Boston. Hosts are Rep. Peter
Koutoujian (D-Waltham), Jonathan Hecht (D-Watertown) and Sen. Steven
Tolman (D-Brighton).
The commemoration will honor the following survivors: Aznive Aznavorian
of Arlington; Naomi Armen, Armenian Nursing & Rehabilitation Center,
Jamaica Plain; Areka DerKazarian (born 1912), Watertown; Vergine
Mazmanian (born 1908) Arlington; Charles Mosesian (born 1912); Miriam
Nerkizian (born 1915), Armenian Nursing & Rehabilitation Center,
Jamaica Plain; and Rev. Barkev Orchanian (born 1914), Watertown.
The event will also bestow resolutions honoring Daniel Varoujan
Hejinian for his artistic contributions, and Armenian Independent
Broadcasting of Boston for 30 years of covering the Armenian community
in Massachusetts.
Program participants include students from St. Stephen’s Elementary
Armenian School in Watertown and students from the Armenian Sisters’
Academy in Lexington. Musical performance will be presented by the
Norazart Vocal Ensemble.
