SCOTLAND HOSTS INT’L CONFERENCE ON CAUCASUS

Scotland’s well-know St Andrews University held the conference on
Caucasus, the Azerbaijani embassy in London reported.

The university’s centre for Russian, Soviet, Central and East European
studies supported by the British Academy and CRCEES hold annual
conference ‘The Caucasus: Imagining Freedom, Negotiating Dominion’.

The ambassadors of the South Caucasus countries in UK, the scientists,
the university’s professors and students attended the event.

In his speech, Azerbaijani Ambassador to UK Fakhraddin Gurbanov spoke
about social-economic reforms in Azerbaijan and the country’s foreign
policy’s general principles. He noted that Azerbaijan’s integration
into NATO is one of the priorities for the country and that the country
has close relations with the regional countries. Speaking about
the country’s rich energy resources, Gurbanov said that Azerbaijan
achieved multi-vectored export infrastructure.

The government pays much attention to develop the other sectors
of the economy, Gurbanov said adding that Azerbaijan occupies the
leading positions in many international organizations’ reports for
its economic figures.

Regarding the regional relations, Gurbanov noted about impossibility
of achieving standing peace and cooperation in the region while the
Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not resolved. He
expressed hope that the ongoing peace negations will bring positive
results, noting that the conflict may be resolved only in the framework
of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

The two-day conference considered the current conflicts in Caucasus,
regional integration aspects, social-political situation in the region.
