ARMENIA TO FREEZE NORMALIZATION DEAL WITH TURKEY

The majority coalition in the Armenian parliament says the ex-Soviet
nation should freeze its ratification of an agreement to normalize
ties with neighboring Turkey.

The coalition accused Turkey of dragging its feet in ratifying the
October deal by demanding the Armenian-Azerbaijani dispute over
Nagorno-Karabakh be settled first.

The coalition says in a statement Thursday that Armenia should suspend
the process until Turkey moves forward with its ratification without
preconditions.

The deal also envisions reopening the border between Turkey and
Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh is an enclave in Azerbaijan that has been under the
control of ethnic Armenian forces since 1994. Turkey shares ethnic
and cultural bonds with Azerbaijan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
