The US President offered euphemisms and evasive terminology to
characterize this crime against humanity: ANCA Statement.
Tehran, April 25, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) – US President Obama issuing a
statement on the 95th anniversary of the mass killings of Armenians by
the Ottoman Turks refrained from labeling this historic event as
‘genocide’.
The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) said the US
President has made yet another disgraceful blunder in the face of
Turkish threats ¦ offering euphemisms and evasive terminology to
characterize this crime against humanity. `President Obama faced a
stark choice: to honor his commitment to recognize the Armenian
Genocide or to remain an accomplice to Turkey’s denial of truth and
justice for this crime,’ ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian said in a
statement.
In his announcement published by the White House, the US President
said, ‘I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in
1915, and my view of that history has not changed. It’s in all of our
interest to see the achievement of a full, frank and just
acknowledgement of the facts.’
Obama described the Armenian tragedy as a devastating chapter in the
history of the Armenian people and urged to keep its memory alive in
honor of those who were murdered so that we do not see again a repeat
of those grave mistakes.
Also in the US, the Turkish Coalition of America issued a statement on
the occasion. It said, `Where does the ethnic cleansing of Ottoman
Turks from the Balkans, Eastern Turkey and Caucasus with 5 million
lost and 5.5 million refugees come on the President’s list of `worst
atrocities of the 20th century?’ Do they deserve at least an annual
presidential remembrance from him, as he dutifully makes on this
occasion every years?’
The Turkish Coalition of America also recognizes the Armenian
suffering and respect to those who lost their lives during the
tragedy. It called on all humanity to place such tragedies in their
proper historical context.
