The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs will visit Baku soon, the Russian
ambassador to Azerbaijan said today.
Vladimir Dorokhin was answering questions from journalists about
Russian mediator Igor Popov’s recent visit to Karabakh.
Asked about Popov’s reported discussions on the construction of an
airport in the Karabakh capital, Khankendi, the ambassador said that
he could not comment on the issue.
He said journalists would be able to ask Popov himself about the
talks during his imminent visit .
Igor Popov, the new Russian co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group,
met Karabakh’s leader Bako Sahakyan on 29 April. They discussed
socio-economic issues in Karabakh and the construction of an airport,
Armenian media reported.
The chairman of the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh, Bayram
Safarov, today dismissed talk of an airport.
‘The statement of the new Russian co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group
on the construction of an airport in Armenian-occupied Khankendi is
absurd,’ Safarov said.
‘This airport is in Azerbaijan and only Baku can make decisions about
it,’ Safarov said.
