INSTITUTION OF OMBUDSMAN TO BE ESTABLISHED IN TURKEY: ARMENIAN OMBUDSMAN EXPRESSES READINESS TO SUPPORT

The Armenian Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan received the delegation headed
by the PACE President Mevlut Cavusoglu Thursday. Challenges on the
protection of the human rights in Armenia and the region were discussed
at the meeting, information department of Ombudsman’s office reported.
Mr. Cavusoglu said this is among his first visits to the member
states after assuming as a PACE President (he visited Moldova and
Azerbaijan). Signifying the role of Ombudsman in the implementation
of Armenia’s commitments in the Council of Europe, PACE President
signified the processes of implementation of the proposals made by
Council of Europe Anti-Torture Committee report, improvement of the
election code, as well as the reforms in the sphere of justice.
Armen Harutyunyan presented his annual report 2009 and the one on
Fair Investigation.
Referring to the challenges of the protection of human rights, the
Ombudsman noted the significance of the development of the atmosphere
of tolerance and the formation of the dialogue culture. Signifying Mr.
Cavusoglu’s responsible mission as PACE President, the Ombudsman
highlighted the importance of ensuring solidarity and stability in
the region as the main precondition to guarantee the human rights.
PACE President said Turkey is planning constitutional reforms in the
upcoming months and institution of Ombudsman is due to be established
in the country. Armen Harutyunyan expressed readiness to support the
process and establish of further cooperation.
