The EU wants to be actively involved in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and
is ready to provide the necessary funds to help resolve the conflict
and restore the region, European Commissioner for Enlargement and
European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule stated in an interview
with RFE/RL.

“Now we allocate more funds for confidence-building measures between
the sides in Transnistria or Karabakh. But this is only the first
step,” he noted.

According Fule, the EU has already taken an active role in the
resolution of Transnistria conflict and is willing to take steps in
Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

The diplomat emphasized changing the current format of the OSCE
Minsk Group is not discussed. “I do not think we are dealing with
replacement of a member of the Minsk Group. The parties to the conflict
and the OSCE Minsk Group should create conditions for the EU’s active
participation at this stage.

According to the official, the European Union may prepare a package
of assistance for the parties when they come to a final agreement
along with confidence-building measures.

“This package will include activities that will contribute to social
and economic development. If necessary, the EU can also restore
the infrastructure to link certain areas to other countries,” Fule
emphasized.
