France legend Youri Djorkaeff has shared a nostalgic photo of Henrikh Mkhitaryan while congratulating the midfielder on his side’s Europa League victory.
The World Cup winner revealed how the 28-year-old Manchester United star set his sights on winning the competition as a youngster.
“That day you told me you would one day win the Cup too…you deserve it my friend!!!! Congratulations,” tweeted the former Monaco and PSG forward.
The throwback photo shows Djorkaeff, who scored 28 goals in 82 appearances for France, with his arm around a smiling Mkhitaryan.
“Thank you so much @youridjorkaeff ! Seems like just yesterday we took this picture and now I get to fulfil my goals just like you,” replied the Armenia captain.
Mkhitaryan flicked the ball home early in the second half following a corner to help Joes Mourniho’s side to a 2-0 victory over Ajax in the final.
His midfield partner Ander Herrera dedicated their Europa League triumph to the victims of the deadly bomb attack in Manchester.
“I want to dedicate the trophy to the victims,” he told reporters.
“This is just football but what happened on Monday was horrible. We want peace in the world and respect. This happened in Manchester but everywhere we have to be a united world to fight for peace and to have no more attacks.
“Yesterday morning we were devastated and really sad,” he added.
“It was difficult to train yesterday but the manager told us is that the only thing we could do is win this for them.”
