Sports: Mkhitaryan puts Armenia on the map

An excellent 2016/17 campaign saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan's fame grow and grow, while he simultaneously raised the profile of Armenian football as he helped Manchester United to Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League success.

With 11 goals over the course of the season, he was the Red Devils' second-top scorer behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while the 28-year-old also provided five assists.

It was on the continent that he performed best, netting six times as United marched towards, and won, the Europa League final.

With strikes against Saint-Etienne, Rostov, Anderlecht and Ajax, the Armenia captain put his nation on the map, becoming the first player from the country to win a major European trophy.

In total, he has now won 18 titles across four countries – Armenia, Ukraine, Germany and England – and he has no plans to cap his haul there.

The 2017/18 season will be an important one for him and for his team, as United return to the Champions League.
