YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS. Kyrgyzstan’s ex-president Almazbek Atambayev has been charged with corruption, his lawyer Sergei Slesaryov has said on August 9.

“Ayambayev has been charged with corruption, there are no other details yet,” he said.

Slesyarov said that Atambayev has been placed under pre-trial detention until August 26.

The former leader of the country was arrested on August 8 in his home in the village of Koy-Tash.

A day before, when SWAT teams arrived to arrest him, his supporters gathered around the house to prevent Atambayev from being taken into custody. More than 40 people were injured, and one SWAT soldier was killed. Atambayev later said he was the one who opened gunfire.
