In an exclusive interview with Azg Daily, Baikar Weekly and Armenian Mirror-Spectator Weekly, President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian said he acts within the scope of the constitutional powers of the president and isn’t preparing to breach those powers in order to get on the good side of anyone or any group in interior politics.
“I am certain that the presidential institution must be out of political debates so that it can play its balancing role and its role to support national unity,” he emphasized.
The Armenian president stated that, of course, as a citizen and individual, he has his personal opinion on events or phenomena that take place in the country. “I understand that there are great expectations from the President as the head of state, but, taking into consideration the limited and specific constitutional powers reserved for the President of the Republic of Armenia, those expectations are often unrealistic,” President Sarkissian said.
In response to a journalist’s question, Sarkissian said the state, political parties, economic operators and the society itself must be interested in having truly free and independent media. “I view the functioning of professional and impartial media as a matter of national security, both internally and externally,” Sarkissian said.
