Law
A senior lawmaker from the opposition Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) on Monday raised the urgency of combating pre-natal sex-selection in Armenia, proposing steps towards drafting a legislation "aimed at the protection of unborn lives".
Naira Zohrabyan, who heads the National Assembly's Standing Committee on the Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, said they have been receiving proposals from different lawyers recently expressing strong concern over the issue.
"With its rate of sex-selective abortions, Armenia shares a rather sad 'companionship' with Albania and Azerbaijan. We tried to regulate the problem legislatively, but I agree that we need to guide ourselves by a law on the rights of the unborn child," she said at the Committee's session.
