Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan has issued the following statement on setting up a COVID-19 inquiry committee:
“Pursuant to part 1 of Article 20 of the Constitutional Law of Armenia “Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, upon the request of at least one quarter of the total number of deputies, by virtue of law, an inquiry committee of the National Assembly has been set up to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Armenia, and to study the effectiveness of the measures of the government of Armenia and the Commandant’s Office toward the fight against this virus, mitigation or elimination of the consequences of the epidemic, as well as the effectiveness and legality of the restrictions on human rights and fundamental freedoms during the current state of emergency in Armenia.
Pursuant to part 6 of Article 20 of the Constitutional Law of Armenia “Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, the draft decision of the National Assembly prescribing the number of members of the inquiry committee will be considered during the first regular session of the National Assembly in September 2020.”
