YEREVAN. – As farmers in Armenia were not provided with high quality seeds, this year an average grain yield is expected in the country. Hrach Berberyan, chairman of the “Agrarian-Peasant Union” NGO, told Armenian News-NEWS.am about this.
"I believe that if the village mayors do not ‘draw’ numbers, the average yield will be 1.8 tons per hectare [in Armenia]. If we take into account that 50-55 thousand hectares of grain have been sown, naturally, we will have a harvest of 100 thousand tons [this year], no more, at best," he said.
Berberyan noted that the state support in the form of diesel fuel and fertilizers is not right, and the farmers of Armenia should be helped with low-interest loans.
The agriculturalist added the government has promised to import 5,000 tons of high-quality seeds by the end of the year, and he expressed the hope that this project would be implemented.
