Leader of the My Step faction of the National Assembly of Armenia Lilit Makunts doesn’t agree with the view that the ruling party is minimizing the powers and functions of President Armen Sarkissian.
“If you are referring to the recent amendments that the parliament adopted and forwarded to the President, the President wouldn’t have signed the amendments, if he didn’t accept them. Therefore, taking powers or depriving the President of his powers is out of the question,” Makunts said.
Touching upon the statement that President Sarkissian made during a meeting with some members of the Professional Commission on Constitutional Reforms, stating that he has to appoint candidates for judges of the Constitutional Court, not nominate them, Makunts said the following:
“The aim is to balance constitutional bodies and make sure they work as independently as possible. The task force will consider the proposal and make a decision after it presents justifications for appropriateness of the idea presented by the President. No idea can be rejected when it has simply been proposed,” she said.
