The videos published by the Azeri servicemen are a gross violation of the rights of officer Gurgen Alaverdyan; I have petitioned to international human rights organizations; Naira Zohrabyan, an MP from the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party, wrote this on her Facebook page.
“(…). Gurgen Alaverdyan, an officer of the RA [Republic of Armenia] Armed Forces who was lost in the [combat] positions and represented as the leader of a sabotage team by the Azerbaijanis, was subjected to debasing and violations by Azerbaijani servicemen. (…) and disseminating all this on social media and Azerbaijani TV channels are gross violations of the basic principles of the Geneva Convention.
Let me recall that the Convention guarantees the right to respect for the honor and dignity of prisoners of war, which excludes any debasing and disrespectful treatment.
Council of Europe member Azerbaijan, which has joined many conventions of international law, including the well-known convention on the treatment of prisoners of war, continues to consistently violate and ignore the obligations it has assumed.
We have seen many times how that country treats Armenian servicemen and civilians who have ended up under its jurisdiction and what inhuman tortures the latter are subjected to and are killed (…).
I expect international organizations’ reaction—with all the legal mechanism—to the gross violations of international law by Azerbaijan," Zohrabyan noted, in particular.
