Theoretically speaking, Armenia can have a nuclear weapon, but I hope it doesn’t because its existence won’t solve military issues and will only increase the risks of mutually assured destruction and global disasters. This is what Professor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Areg Danagoulian declared during an online seminar today.
According to him, this is due to the fact that if Yerevan allows itself to create a nuclear weapon, Turkey and Azerbaijan can also allow themselves to create one.
Danagoulian stated that the topic of nuclear weapons is becoming current around the world once again, but it’s important to understand that a third world war can be literally 1,000 times more devastating that World War II, if nuclear weapons are used. “A submarine carries a nuclear bomb that is 48 times more powerful than the cumulative power of all bombs that were exploded during WWII. Russia, the US and Great Britain have a total of 20 such submarines. The use of all these weapons will lead to the death of 200,000,000 people around the world and the drop of temperature to 20 degrees, which won’t rise for a decade. This, in its turn, will cause widespread famine since agriculture won’t develop. Nobody will win during a nuclear war,” the physicist concluded.
Professor Areg Danagoulian and his colleagues from MIT were selected as the 2019 Arms Control Persons of the Year during the annual contest organized by the Arms Control Association.
Prof. Danagoulian and his team were nominated for their work developing an innovative new nuclear disarmament verification process using neutron beams.
French president Emmanuel Macron, Swedish Foreign Ministry, senators and House representatives were among the nominees.
