Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh in despair after trauma of military defeat

Issued on: 02/04/2021 – 19:53

At the end of September 2020, Azerbaijan launched a rapid military offensive that left thousands dead in Nagorno-Karabakh. Within six weeks, the predominantly Armenian enclave had suffered a crushing defeat and large territorial losses. How are its people coping with the trauma now? And what role is being played by Russia, which brokered the ceasefire signed on November 9, 2020? FRANCE 24's reporters Jonathan Walsh and Mohamed Farhat have been to Nagorno-Karabakh to find out.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
