Out of Armenia’s representatives playing at the play-offs for the World Chess Cup taking place in Sochi, Hayk Martirosyan and Hovhannes Gabuzyan made it to the second round.
During the tie-break in the 1/128 final, Martirosyan defeated Zambian Chitumbo Mvali in both matches of rapid chess and will compete with Turkish chess player Mustafa Yilmaz during the 1/64 final.
Gabuzyan also won the tie-break after defeating Algerian Bilel Belahsene 2-0. Gabuzyan’s next opponent will be Egypt’s representative Basem Amin.
Levon Aronian will start competing during the 1/64 final and will face off against Turkish-Australian Bobby Chang, who defeated Vahap Sanal.
During the women’s tournament, Armenia’s only representative Elina Danielyan made it to the 1/64 final after defeating Paraguayan Gabriela Vargas in two classic games. In the second round, Danielyan’s opponent will be Romania chess player Irina Bulmaga.
The second round is set to kick off on July 15.
