Out of Armenia’s representatives playing at the play-offs for the World Chess Cup taking place in Sochi, Hayk Martirosyan and Hovhannes Gabuzyan made it to the second round.

During the tie-break in the 1/128 final, Martirosyan defeated Zambian Chitumbo Mvali in both matches of rapid chess and will compete with Turkish chess player Mustafa Yilmaz during the 1/64 final.

Gabuzyan also won the tie-break after defeating Algerian Bilel Belahsene 2-0. Gabuzyan’s next opponent will be Egypt’s representative Basem Amin.

Levon Aronian will start competing during the 1/64 final and will face off against Turkish-Australian Bobby Chang, who defeated Vahap Sanal.

During the women’s tournament, Armenia’s only representative Elina Danielyan made it to the 1/64 final after defeating Paraguayan Gabriela Vargas in two classic games. In the second round, Danielyan’s opponent will be Romania chess player Irina Bulmaga.

The second round is set to kick off on July 15.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
