YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 3, NOYAN TAPAN. A university is a center of
receiving a profession, the "production" of which, specialists, should
take part in country’s development without fail. Haroutiun Armenian,
the Rector of the American University of Armenia, expressed such an
opinion at the September 3 press conference. According to him, the
American University of Armenia has given a great number of leavers
during its activity, more than 80% of which promotes activity in
Armenia.

H. Armenian considers that universities should be a basis for new
ideas, new acts. In his words, the issue of the quality of education is
among the first and foremost problems, as the country cannot develop
with the potential of mediocre specialists. It was mentioned that
in difference to other universities, at the American University of
Armenia, a student, who is given all possibilities for receiving
education, lecturers’ staff, a rich library, computer rooms, bears
the responsibility of receiving education himself. And a lecturer
only gives directions in this issue.

In H. Armenian’s words, previously the University’s goal was to
educate country’s future leaders, while today its goal is to train
entrepreneurs, as this country has 2.5m leaders. "And an entrepreneur
is an individuality, who implements a concrete program and idea,"
the University’s Rector said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
