YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS: A crackdown on corruption in
tax bodies, a tougher administration and reducing shadow economic
activity topped the agenda of a meeting president Robert Kocharian
had with prime minister Serzh Sarkisian, chief of his staff, heads
of tax committee and customs service, chief policeman and heads of
other government agencies.
Kocharian’s press office said head of the state taxation service
Vahram Barseghian, spoke about what his agency has been doing in the
last two months since his appointment to spearhead the service.
Kocharian was quoted by his press office as saying that tax officers
should be more resolute, apply tougher administration in order to
meet all projected targets.
The president expressed his concerns over lack of sufficient
administration and absence of effective supervision. He also singled
out legislation loopholes and cases of nepotism on part of senior
taxmen.
Kocharian said no businessman in the country must enjoy tax and other
privileges and issued concrete instructions to track down tax and
customs officers practicing nepotism and hold all responsible.
He argued in favor of a comprehensive plan of actions that will help
close all loopholes for all those who try to avoid taxes.
Kocharian ordered that a plan of concrete actions to tackle these
problems be presented in two days.
