DECREASE IN NUMBER OF WOMEN PRISONERS IN AZERBAIJAN

Examination Centre will carry out a range of measures to release
some women prisoners and will develop a set of proposals, Sevil
Allahverdiyeva, the chairman of the Centre, reported.

Monitoring was held by the Centre for Agitation of Women Problems in
the Women’s Prison 4 to become familiar with human rights protection
and corresponding of the prison to international standards.

The crimes committed by the majority of women range from killing
their husbands, fraud, prostitution and participation in illegal
drugs. There are carpet weaving and sewing shops in the prison. The
ventilation system in the prison is in a terrible condition. The
prison also has a shower room, beauty shop and library, hospital
and mosque. The ‘ Azerbaijan’, ‘Republic’, ‘Khalg’, ‘ Baku worker’
newspapers are constantly supplied in the prison. The monitoring
group felt the meals served in the prison to be normal.

The age of most women prisoners ranged from 18 to 68.

Besides the Azerbaijani women there are prisoners from 8 countries
serving their sentence; 10 from Russia, 7 from Georgia, 2 from
Ukraine, 1 from Uzbekistan, 1 from Kyrgyzstan, 1 from Kazakhstan,
1 from Moldova and 1 from Iran.

The ethnic composition of the women is 203 Azerbaijanis, 14 Russians,
4 Avar, 2 Lezgi, 2 Georgian, 1 Ukrainian, 1 Chuvash, 1 Gipsy, 1 German,
1 Gagauz, 1Kirghiz, 1 Uzbek, 1 Chechen, 1 Kabardinian, 1 Armenian.

In total 239 women are serving their sentence in the Women’s Prison 4.
