THEY VOTED OUT OF CONSCIENCE, NOW THEY CONDEMN OUT OF WHAT?

On September 18 members of parliament Larissa Alaverdyan and Gagik
Minasyan condemned the act of violence against the reporter Hovanes
Galajyan. Like Galust Sahakyan, Gagik Minasyan also said it is a
blow at the country’s reputation, and the wrongdoers must be revealed
immediately. Larissa Alaverdyan said it is unacceptable when violent
means are used against freedom of speech for there are other means.

These statements are strange. For instance, what does Larissa
Alaverdyan’s pronouncement mean? Is the violent way of suppressing
freedom of speech unacceptable whereas the other means are not?

"I did not say they are not. I said unfortunately there are still other
methods of limiting freedom of speech. I did not commend, I condemned,
and physical violence is not acceptable because unfortunately, I
repeat, there are other methods in use, and we made statements and
interfered in this connection," Larissa Alaverdyan says.

The other strange thing about her statement is that the member of
the opposition Heritage faction condemns violence against reporters,
arbitrariness and calls for revealing the wrongdoers but in voting
to the nomination or reappointment of the Prosecutor General who is
responsible for all this the Heritage faction decided to vote out of
conscience. Larissa Alaverdyan says all the members of the faction
voted against the nomination of the prosecutor general. "Why out of
conscience? Because without an imperative mandate, with secret ballot,
we will use this formula," Larissa Alaverdyan says.

As to Gagik Minasyan, perhaps there is no need to ask why his faction
voted for the appointment of a prosecutor whose office is marked by
a number of unrevealed acts of violence and murders, which Gagik
Minasyan says damage the country’s reputation. Gagik Minasyan and
the parliament majority have to condemn violence but they also cannot
vote against the nomination of the prosecutor general.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
