Yesterday the ARF Dashnaktsutyun’s General Meeting in Stepanakert
named two presidential candidates: Vahan Hovanisyan, Deputy Speaker,
ARF Bureau member, and Armen Rustamyan, member of the ARF Supreme
Body. In commenting on the decision of the general meeting Vahan
Hovanisyan said it would be strange if the political party which
has displayed its power as both opposition and government did not
run in the presidential election. He criticized the economic policy
of the country and said Dashnaktsutyun resisted the temptations of
power. In answer to the question whether the ARF Dashnaktsutyun will
be a pro-government or an oppositionist force, Vahan Hovanisyan
said: "We will be an alternative to both the government and the
opposition. We managed to show that there can be "another government",
and a non-adversarial opposition." According to Vahan Hovanisyan,
people must know whom the future president will owe his victory,
criminals or an organized force.
