INDEPENDENCE

16 years ago, on September 21, 1991 over 94 percent of the citizens of
Armenia voted in the Referendum on Independence, and 99 percent said
Yes to independence. Now it is difficult to tell how many percent of
the participants of the 16-year-old referendum lived in independent
Armenia for how many days, months or years over the past 16 years. It
is difficult to tell how many people who voted Yes and who lived in
the independent country we have had for 16 years now believe that they
made the right vote and how many are indifferent. At the moment,
however, it is not important what each citizen thinks about their
16-year-old decision, who thinks it was a mistake and who thinks it
was the right decision. It is important that the result of the
referendum was right, although on the other hand the geopolitical
moment was such that even if the Armenians said No to independence, it
would be inevitable since the country, the system on which Armenia
depended was collapsing. In other words, like at the beginning of the
20th century, at the end of the century it was also inevitable,
consequently we may say that every time Armenia gains independence by
providence. Perhaps because every time it lost independence due to its
mistakes. And the core mistake was that the real independence was
covered by bulky speeches and emotional congratulations, because
speeches take one day’s work in a year, whereas independence takes 364
days. Therefore, congratulating the citizen of Armenia on September 21
for regaining independence, in order not to add to the pompous
speeches, not to explain the charm of independence, because the
citizen has felt the charm of independence and the hardships that
independence "awarded", we only wish that after regaining the citizen
of Armenia regain their independence. Congratulations!

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
