Armenian President, Ministers Discuss Military Reforms

ARMENIAN PRESIDENT, MINISTERS DISCUSS MILITARY REFORMS

[Presenter] Armenian President Robert Kocharyan today held a working
meeting to discuss the current stage of reforms carried out in the
Defence Ministry. The meeting was attended by Armenian Prime Minister
[Serzh Sargsyan], Armenian Defence Minister [Mikayel Harutyunyan], the
chairman of defence, national security and internal affairs commission
of parliament and the head of the president’s administration.

Kocharyan said that the current reforms are mainly aimed at
strengthening the civilian supervision of the Defence Ministry,
as well as at increasing the effectiveness of the management and
providing the optimal use of resources.

The participants of the meeting have discussed a draft law on special
service which is planned to be adopted by the end of this year.

Kocharyan said that a great work is expected from us in the future and
instructed the participants to solve the task in line while adhering
to the deadline.

[Harutyunyan] We mainly discussed the draft law on special service
during the meeting. The draft law should be submitted to the Armenian
National Assembly for discussion. We also discussed issues concerning
the activities of the Defence Ministry. The Armenian president
instructed us to reconsider the law on the defence and informed him
of situation.
