Armenia’s Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian does not exclude the
possibility he may be contesting the presidency in the spring of 2008.
"It is difficult to say anything definite at this point. The congress
of the Republican Party on November 10 will decide everything," he
told a news conference at Itar-Tass on Tuesday. "In Armenia there are
very many worthy people and we are to enter into a civilized struggle
in the forthcoming presidential election," Sarkisian said.
The leader of the Republican Party declared his intention to run for
president in the spring of 2008 as soon as the returns from the May
12 elections to the National Assembly were made public.
The right-of-center Republican Party of Armenia won 65 mandates of
the 131.
"The elections showed that the RPA has a large credibility potential
and if the party makes such a decision (nominate Sarkisian its
candidate for the head of state – Itar-Tass), I shall participate,"
the prime minister said.
