APP FAVORS CONSOLIDATION WHILE ACP HAS NO INTENTION TO SUPPORT ANYONE

ROUBEN TOVMASYAN, Secretary of the Armenian Communist Party (ACP)
and GRIGOR HAROUTYUNYAN, Vice Chair of the Armenian People’s Party
(APP) were having a debate in `Hayeli’ club yesterday
The Armenian Communist Party will make a decision on participating
the in presidential elections during the party session to be held in
November. With regard to supporting any faction, Rouben Tomasyan said
that, `ACP does not currently find anyone in the country whom it can
support; to support in a way that might lead to resuming social
justice, increasing the people’s life standards and regulating the
dramatic increase of the prices on the market. In this respect, the
party has a sober assessment, which will be publicized during the
regular 37th session.’
Many political factions address to ACP with a proposal of
consolidating, but they are rejected. `I will not publicize those
names; let them do it themselves, because in case of publicizing a
single letter they label us as supporters of this or that political
force.’
Unlike the Communists, the Armenian People’s Party is a proponent
of the Opposition’s running for election with a united team and if
possible – with a united candidate.
As shown by the Parliamentary elections, a united candidate is
required in the fight against the pro-Governmental resource.
Naturally, running for parliamentary elections with a united team
does not always prove successful, but in presidential elections it is
definitely possible to have a united candidate,’ the APP leader
believes.
According to G. Haroutyunyan, their party has meetings with very
many political factions, `I mean the factions representing the
pro-Opposition front. As soon as they make up their mind which
candidate to support and admit, we will naturally be the most active
participant of those processes. Although, Levon Ter-Petrosyan is
currently much spoken about, he doesn’t yet propose his candidacy; he
hasn’t even announced that he’s going to do so. As soon as he himself
declares of his intention of running for elections, APP will discuss
the issue and express its approaches.’
The answers to these questions will be given during the APP
session to be convened in November; there is, however, certain
clarity of approaches. `We are of the opinion that it is not
currently proper to run for election in separate teams. It is
impossible, and this kind of attempt is doomed to failure,’ the APP
member emphasized.
R. Tovmasyan deemed it necessary to express his opinion about the
possibility of the ex-Presidents running for election too. `This is
the president who resigned and, while doing so, said, `I am going and
leaving the people with the party of war’, the president who said `I
will return if the people ask me to do so.’ For a president who has
resigned in this, I would introduce a law not entitling him to a
second voting.
To underscore the impossibility of their party’s supporting any
faction, the atheist communist clearly emphasized, `Even if Christ
covers them with an aureole, we won’t support anyone.’
Achieving a shift of power by way of consolidating all the
political factions is considered as the party’s political mission.
`The goal of our party is to contribute to a normal process of power
shift in the country, that’s to say, to enable the people to choose
their government.’ His speech also contained several rhetorical
questions: `Do we have a future in view of the present-day situation
of the country? Can we have a future if the people do not become a
factor or, if they do not form a government? ‘
Naturally, the ACP leader does not stop thinking about the people
either. `Those acceding to power should be individuals who do think
about the people vs. the individuals who think about the people from
their palaces. The system has to be changed entirely.’

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
