There Should Probably Be a "Turkey" Pun Here
By embryowassup – Posted on October 13th, 2007
With perhaps the worst timing in history, a House committee has
submitted a resolution to the House floor to call the Armenian
Genocide just that – a genocide.
>From 1915-1917, the Ottoman Turks deported, interred, or killed more
than 1.5 million Armenians living in the Ottoman empire. The United
States still has yet to officially recognize the genocide.
And I suppose that it’s understandable. Since then, we’ve had to deal
with two world wars, a depression, military conflicts out the ass,
political scandals, sex scandals, political sex scandals, NATO, UN,
GATT, IMF, WTO, NAFTA, PMRC, ESRB, RIAA, and a list of tax hikes that
could go on for decades.
Of course, now that we’ve invaded Iraq and fractured it into three
unstable factions of Shi’ites, Sunnis and Kurds, now that the Turkish
‘democracy’ (because as long as there’s a government, there’s no such
thing as democracy) is waning, now that the Kurdish separatists are
starting to gain some real wind, it’s no wonder that Congress chose
now to alienate the only thing we seem to have diplomatic control
over in that region.
And since we have defamed an empire long dead and forgotten, it’s
Turkey’s time to say, "Fuck it," and wage war on the armed
separatists and make their way into the northern reaches of Iraq
(even though they wouldn’t let us do it ourselves back in 2003 when
we started the war).
Why would Congress choose now? Perhaps they enjoy entropy as much as
I do.
