It’s plain dumb for the U.S. House to jump into the long running
Turkish-Armenian dispute by declaring a 90-year-old conflict
"genocide."
Turkey’s an ally in the war Congress approved. Irking an ally is
not smart, the Nancy Pelosi approved moving the measure forward. The
action is mostly a swipe at Bush and the war, notwithstanding some
Republican support.
If you lessen the chances of stabilizing Iraq, you slap GOP war
strategy and give Democrats a leg up in 2008, the theory goes.
However, it’s reckless to the point of endangering troops, should
Turkey decide to stop helping the U.S. in the war. Perhaps that’s
what Pelosi wants: damage the war effort to speed up peace? If so,
she’s on the right track.
Who’s going to tell combat troops that Congress deliberately endangered
a strategic supply route? If a you don’t get your replacement ammo
in time for the next battle, who you gonna call?
As one pundit noted, Pelosi is more interested in representing San
Francisco than representing the national interest.
Interestingly, Osama bin Laden’s has vowed a sustained campaign to
kill Americans, women and children included. But there’s no fresh
move to hang a Congressional "genocide" sign around his miserable neck.
Laughably, the resolution condemns the Ottoman Empire, which disbanded
in 1922. A dead government won’t change its behavior, no matter how
persuasive Pelosi.
She might as well go all the way and slap the Confederacy for
mistreating Civil War war prisoners and China for killing millions
in the quest for cultural purity.
Over the weekend, Pelosi whined that Bush didn’t telephone her on
the matter. She’s an adult. She should figure out the international
consequences on her own. Beyond that, what kept Pelosi from calling
Bush re troop safety?
>From Nancy’s office, it’s a local call.
Here for women who vote for women.
And here for Pelosi.
